What

Created by Dorothy Frayer in the late 1960s, The Frayer Model is a type of graphic organizer that uses a four-square model to determine, clarify, and analyze word meaning and structure. The Frayer Model enables readers to understand the attributes of words and relationships between concepts or word structures. The Frayer Model prompts students to think about:

- Defining the concept/word/term
- Describing its essential characteristics
- Providing examples of the idea, and
- Offering non-examples of the idea.

Helps students determine or clarify the meaning of vocabulary words encountered while listening, reading, and viewing texts
- Used before reading to activate background knowledge
- During reading to monitor vocabulary
- After reading to assess vocabulary
