Course Description – Medical Core I

This course introduces students to diverse occupations in the medical/health field and to standards required of workers in the field.  Health/Medical Core I includes instruction in the ethical and legal responsibilities of the health care worker, safety, medical terminology, human anatomy &physiology, body systems and mechanics, standard precautions and health & fitness.  Also included are health care delivery systems, regulatory agencies, research, current technology, and socioeconomic issues affecting health care.  Students explore career opportunities in therapeutic, diagnostic, and supportive areas.  This course includes National Healthcare Foundation Standards.

 Course Description – Medical Core II

This course expands student knowledge and use of the medical terminology, deepens their knowledge of the body system, common disease and disorders, bio-safety.  Instruction includes the study of human growth and development, and a reinforcement of the math and computational skills needed for health care professionals.  Students gain practical hands-on experience in Vital Signs, Emergency Care, First Aid and CPR.

Prerequisites:

No prerequisite for this class.  This course is an introductory course.  It is a prerequisite for other advanced courses related to Health.

What to bring to class/Online:

• Black, blue ink pen, high lighter  
• Chrome books, and charger, Index cards
• Lecture notes or materials given needed to complete work
• USB drive for projects
• Fully charged Chrome book/PC/laptop

Certificate Requirements

Course requirements will be fulfilled by the use of classroom assignments, student prepared presentations, quizzes and a final exam.

Grading Policy

Academic grades will reflect the quality of work produced, academic honesty, participation, attitude and preparedness.  Projects will be graded and assigned points, and the letter grade given based on a points system. 

90 – 100% = A    Test/Final:                      

80 –  89%  = B     Assignments:     

70 – 79%   = C    Labs:               

60 – 69%   = D             

59 – below = F

Attendance:

In order to obtain the maximum benefit of the course, regular attendance online is important. Absences will cause you to fall behind the rest of the class, and it may be difficult for you to catch up.  All missed assignments must be made up on your own time, not during class time. You are allowed three absences after the third absent you will be dropped from the course.  If you come in late three times it will count as one absent.  Classroom Behavior: 

I am training you to work in a professional environment; therefore, a few rules for generalized civilized behavior while online are required.  There is NO profanity allowed and talking is permitted only during assigned times.  This is not a punishment but rather to train you to be quiet, professional, and attentive in your future clinical setting. You must be considerate of your behavior and be mindful about any background noise so ensure you are muted at all times except when you are going to speak, you can then unmute yourself.

Homework:

You should plan to spend at least as many hours at home as you do here in the school to master all of the materials presented.  You must take full responsibility for your study time.  It will be impossible for you to succeed in this class without home study.

 Testing:

If you are not present on the day of the scheduled test, you may test; however, to be fair to students who tested on time, there will be a penalty of one grade down.  This is not to be abused.  You may also test early with prior notification.

• No food is allowed during online sessions, water bottles, okay
• Shouting and profanity is not acceptable
• No cheating.  You will receive an “F” if caught
• Handle textbooks with care
