Key Terms

digital technology: electronic devices and media platforms such as computers, cell phones, video, the Internet, and video games that allow users to create, communicate, and interact with one another or with the device or application itself

sexting: sending or receiving sexually explicit photos or videos by text message or other digital technologies

It's easy to become comfortable online and forget that the Internet is a web of public connections. We may feel like our online interactions are private, but this isn't always true. Flirting online can be especially risky since very personal self-disclosure using digital technology can easily spiral out of control.  A text, message, photo, or video creates an enduring record of what you shared. Someone can copy, paste, forward, alter, tag, or share this information with others, even if you believe they wouldn’t. Going beyond flirting to sending explicit photos of yourself or others is a big mistake. You might find your a target of unwanted online attention thanks to people you think you know and trust.

Watch:  "Ally's Story - Second Thoughts on Sexting" a video about a girl who sent a “sext” message to her boyfriend, which he shared with others.

  • reflect on the role of digital technologies in romantic relationships,
  • understand risky forms of self-disclosure and their possible consequences,
  • identify strategies for avoiding sexting while enhancing positive relationships.
