Key Terms

manipulation:  noun - skillful or artful management, especially in an unfair way

risky: adjective - potentially harmful to one’s emotional or physical well-being

self-disclose: verb -  reveal personal, confidential, or sensitive information to another person

One of the benefits of going online is connecting  through chat, texting, gaming, and other activities. But what about situations that become uncomfortable? This may happen online when others become overly personal or hostile or if you self-disclose too much. If you respond to inappropriate requests or hostility in ways that are out of character, it can make you feel powerless and leave you open to manipulation. It's important to keep yourself safe by thinking ahead about what you will and won't do online.

Watch: "Perspectives on Chatting Safely Online," a short video in which teens share their rules of the road for connecting with others online.

  • reflect on positive aspects of online talking and messaging,
  • identify situations in which flirting and chatting become inappropriate and risky,
  • understand rules for safe online messaging, and feel empowered to deal with uncomfortable situations when communicating online.
