 Key Terms

anonymous: adjective -  not named or identified

inauthentic: adjective - not real, accurate, or sincere

persona: noun - the personality that a person projects in public or an internet persona the user establishes in online communities and websites.

The Internet creates a sense of freedom  to express ideas and individuality. A person can emphasize the strongest parts of their personality and explore new experiences, ideas, and interests. However, this sense of being free and anonymous can lead some people to engage in activities and social exchanges they wouldn't consider in person. Taken to an extreme, they might behave in ways that are unsafe, disrespectful, or harmful to themselves and others.

Watch: "Ramon's Story - Being Real Online" and reflect on how people can present themselves and what it means to be “real” or “fake” online. Understand that assuming different personas online carries both benefits and risks.

  • reflect on the similarities and differences in how people represent themselves online and offline,
  • understand that they might choose to show different parts of themselves online, depending on context and audience,
  • consider the risks and benefits of assuming different personas online, and think critically about what it means to be genuine in an online context.
