Key Concepts

Watch a scenario from the TV show Friday Night Lights, in which a teen girl creates a hate website about another girl. Reflect on what actions you can take if you encounter online cruelty, including how to be an upstander.

  • articulate why it’s important to consider the perspectives of others in online (and offline) communities,
  • consider the motivations and feelings of all the parties involved in an incident of online cruelty,
  • draw conclusions about how you should respond when someone is the target of online cruelty.

upstander: Someone who stands up for a victim while they are being bullied. You are at the playground and someone comes over and starts to trash talk about you. There are a crowd of bystanders but no one will help you stand up to the bully. The one person who does stand up will you to the bully is the upstander.
