Sample Module Using Text with Embedded Content - Intro

Sample Module Using 'Text with Embedded Content'

_____________________________________________________

The following is a portion of an actual module that was developed using text with embedded content in Canvas. The module was extracted from a Mission & Orientation Program here at CSM that was comprised of four units each having 4 lessons in them. What follows is part of one of the lessons for the second module of the program. Overall, this is but one example of how text with embedded content might be used in a course. This approach to course organization might work well with your own classes or it might not. You might have a preference for this approach or one of the others. Our goal, then, is to demonstrate a range of possibilities for you so that you can select the organization that best fits with your needs. The following example is therefore but one of many different ways to approach course design.

Unit II, Lesson 1 - Catherine McAuley

Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  1. State who the foundress of the Sister of Mercy was (Hint: This lesson is named after her!).
  2. Describe the conditions that the foundress grew up and lived in.
  3. Identify key values that were central for the foundress.
  4. Describe at least 2 contemporary images that have been used to represent this foundress and state your own views on the potential impact of each of these images it.

Each of these objectives align with the second main objective for this program. This lesson builds upon the first Unit where we learned about the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns. This lessons is intended to help you to better understand where these Critical Concerns come from as well as what the origins of the Sisters of Mercy are. In the next lesson, we will be learning about some of the sisters on our campus and in our community and they will refer back to these origins.

It is therefore important that we spend sometime learning about the foundress. Do help us with this, we will be completing the following activities:

  1. You will begin with a pre-assessment. [not included in this demo]
  2. Read about the history of the Sisters of Mercy (2 pages).
  3. Watch a 2-part video on the foundress (24 minutes total).
  4. Visit a website to learn more about the foundress' home (~30 minutes).
  5. Complete a discussion board on your experiences with this website [not included in this demo]
  6. Watch a video on different contemporary images of the foundress (5 minutes). [not included in this demo]
  7. You will write a 2-3 page reflection on the foundress (2 hours). See the syllabus for detailed guidelines and the rubric for this assignment. [not included in this demo]
  8. Finally, you will take a post-assessment on the materials covered in this lesson. [not included in this demo]

Overall, you can expect to spend about 4 hours on this lesson.

So, you now have a brief overview of how the Sisters of Mercy were begun and how things have developed since their founding. However, we still need to learn more about the foundress because the life and values of Sr. McAuley have deeply shaped the ministries that today's sisters are involved in. To help us to learn more about Catherine McAuley, there is a 2-part video (24 minutes) that we can watch (Note: the fist part takes a few seconds to begin, so please be patient, it's worth the wait!). As you view each of these, be thinking about the major influences on Catherine's life and how these shaped the kinds of activities that she became involved in. Then, when you go to write your 2-3 page paper for this Lesson, be sure to note these influences.

So, it is clear from these videos that Catherine was deeply shaped by her experiences in the community, particularly with poor women and children. To help us to learn more about her home environment, click on the image below to visit and explore a website about Baggot Street. Following your visit, you will need to complete a discussion board, so you might take a look at the discussion board first to see what to look for as you explore the website.
