Course Development Resources Just for You!
_____________________________________________________
Overview:
The following resources were developed to help support and guide you as you develop your courses in Canvas as well as more generally. Below you will find a range of checklists and rubrics that are intended to provide you with guidance as you design each part of your class. However, these are only beginning/suggested guidelines so please do not feel obligated to follow every recommendation for every part of your class. To see a comprehensive and compressed list of all of these resources, click on the image below. This "Checklists List" contains links to all of these materials as well as to the templates contained on this site. You can also access this list from anywhere on the site by clicking on the "Syllabus" link located on the menu on the left.

Developing Your Essential Course Elements:
To begin, we recommend that you consider each of the essential elements that your course is comprised of: 1) Contextual considerations, 2) Teaching & learning theories, 3) Content, tools, and technologies, 4) Objectives, 5) Pedagogies, strategies, and activities, and 6) Assessments. Below are links to checklists for each of these essential elements:
As you are working on these essential elements, it is considered best practice to ensure that these elements are closely aligned with one another as well as CSM's mission and student learning outcomes (SLOs). For more information on these, click on the images below to learn more about Systematic Alignment Guidelines as well as to view the SLOs:

Course Organization & Module/Unit Design:
As your essential elements begin to take shape, you can start to organize them and build the modules/units for your course. The following checklists are intended to help you with these endeavors:

Getting Started Module & Syllabus Resources:
Once your course has been mostly developed, you can then plan and start developing a Getting Started module/unit as well as the syllabus for the course. The primary purpose of these is to orient your students to the class and help them to get off to a great start. Below you will find checklists for these as well as a "Syllabus Teaching Template" that might help you to craft a more informative syllabus:
An important part of these resources are also the Instructor Introduction, Student Support Resources, and Student Progress Tracking Sheet. These will help students not only to get to know you a little more but also to better know what resources are available as well as what will be expected of them throughout the course. The following resources are therefore intended to help you with these:

Policies & Expectations:
Policies are an inherent part of every course from privacy statements to behavioral expectations. Below are samples to help you with these:

Assessing & Revising:
If you have used each of the above resources, then your course should almost be completed. If so, then now would be a good time to look back and make sure that you haven't missed anything major. Below are two course assessment forms that you can use to do a self-assessment and/or to have a peer provide you with feedback. These rubrics have been developed based on the various checklists above, so not all of what is in them may apply to your specific course. If nothing else, they will hopefully help you to be more aware of the major items that your course should address thereby helping to ensure a better designed and built class:
