Background:
The success of the cultural movement of the Renaissance not only stemmed from the popularity of its ideas but also in the ability for people to get information. An increase in books and literature meant an increase in literacy (or the ability to read and write). New inventions allowed books to be printed faster, cheaper and in greater amounts, more people of every social status began to have access to them. Since there were very few forms of entertainment reading for pleasure, rather than just for education, became a popular past time.
