Background:

One of the greatest and most famous rulers during the medieval age of African history was Mansa Musa.  The wealth he amassed from the lucrative gold and salt trade is legendary.  Yet, aside from possessing a large amount of wealth another one of his greatest achievements was the cultural contributions that he brought back to West Africa from his famous hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca and back.
