Background:

The roles of young girls and boys in China were established early.  For many girls the focus of life was to honor their families by finding a husband and raising a family. For many boys the pursuit of their lives was to become a scholar (Confucian) official and join the Chines bureaucracy.  In today's lesson we will be learning about the practice of women enduring the painful practice of foot binding and how young boys prepared to take the civil service exam.
