Background:
The civilizations of West Africa have a rich and significant history, but unlike other civilizations, the written word and written expression didn't exist in West Africa until the arrival of Arab traders in the early 8th century. Up until this point, the civilizations of West Africa relied on verbal expression and stories to relay their history to future generations. The people that were responsible for this transfer of information were the griots, or professional storytellers.
