Course Description

In this course, students learn about the evolution of e-commerce, trends in global fashion, the importance of branding, and effective ways to advertise and promote a brand.   They study the operation of an established fashion e-commerce business and apply concepts of merchandising, buying, pricing, stock control, omnichannel strategies, layout, and analytical software.    Ultimately, students will create a  website for their business on either a vendor’s marketplace or their own platform.

Course Objectives

At the end of the year the students will be able to:

  • Explain why e-commerce has become a dominant force in the retail business and changed the way the world does business.
  • Compare and contrast the benefits of brick and mortar business model vs eCommerce.
  • Understand global trends in fashion
  • Assess effectiveness of websites looking at the product, pricing, virtual endcaps, merchandising, and how owner tracks purchases and the customer
  • Understand the process for building a business online
  • Create advertising and promotions
  • Set pricing to meet customer and business needs
  • Design an appropriate website based on the product sold

Assignments and Projects: Turn in Policy

Assignments and projects will be given along with in-class participation activities.  Appropriate use of class time for assignments is expected for the duration of the class period.  This is a college-level of the class; research, writing, and visual projects and presentations will be required. Assignments must be completed and turned in by the due date for full credit +10%.  

  • Turning in your work late:  You may turn in late work. I will accept late work after the due date. You will need to accompany any late work with an email explaining any issue you had for the “why your work was done late...
  • Makeup work: If you miss a class you are responsible for finding out what work you missed and catching up in a timely manner.  You will have one extra day for each class you missed with an excused absence.  Please be reminded of the late work policy.
  • Unexcused absences will be treated as late assignments.

 

Classroom Expectations

In order to keep the classroom environment productive and enjoyable for everyone, you will be expected to participate in the following guidelines.  These guidelines will help you be a more effective learner and an asset to the class.

  • Attend class punctually and regularly.  If you are late to class, please communicate with Ms. Acuna in regards to the issue and solution.
  • This is a project-based class; therefore regular attendance is crucial to your success.  Come to class and be responsible.
  • Be prepared for class. Try to limit distractions and find a good space to work.
  • Check the lesson for the daily target and follow the instructions from Canvas and Zoom.
  • Be diligent in study.  Do not fall behind with projects and assignments.  
  • Be respectful and courteous to others at all times. There will be no rudeness, bullying, foul language, or any other form of disrespect to myself or anyone else in our virtual classroom.
  • You are not to leave the classroom for any reason, be sure to come prepared with what you need to work.  I will be giving 5-10 minute breaks to allow for bathroom and/or other necessities
  • Have fun and be open to new ideas and experiences.  Be prepared to learn something new and embrace it.
  • Phones and other electronics will be turned off and kept out of sight.  When we are working on projects and I give permission to listen to music, headphones are required and the device will be face down and untouched.  NO DJing.  Keep in mind that if you are charging your phone on your Chromebook SAUSD has access to your information, INCLUDING photos.
  • Please come to me with any concerns.  I have an open-door policy and am usually available at lunch or during my Zoom office hours if you need to discuss something.
  • Dress Code and School Rules:  All students will be expected to adhere to and follow the rules set by the Santa Ana Unified School district and Santa Ana High School.  

Grading Policy

Time is scheduled for assignments to be done in class.   All assignments will be evaluated for full credit.  Your grades will be based on in-class activities, projects,  and test scores.  The following will also have an effect on your grade; class participation, effort and work ethic, quality of work, attendance and punctuality, behavior/ attitude toward learning, teamwork, and your ability to follow instructions.  Reminder, this is a professional learning experience. If you were in a work environment all of these qualities would be evaluated in a performance review.
